Judge Bernd Zabel has decide to decrease a rapist's jail sentence to ensure he remains under the supervision of correctional officers for a longer period of time. Has Judge Zabel forgotten that while under the so-called 'supervision' this man will be free? It follows, therefore, Judge Zabel believes that during his three- year probation term this rapist will not rape again because he will be receiving counselling for drug addiction and 'phychological' problems. This is an enormously incorrect assumption. Firstly, drug addiction does not cause men to rape. Substance abuse is frequently used to excuse an offender's behavior but in reality, removal of the addictive factor will not end violence against women. Secondly, men who commit rape do not have 'phychological' problems. Research on the phychological profiles of rapists overwhelmingly reveals that they are 'ordinary, normal' men. Sexual assault is about power and control which in fact, are highly regarded expectations for men in our culture. According to the article, Canadian law does not allow for additional periods of probation on sentences over two years. If Judge Zabel wanted to do something really good for society, why didn't he sentence the rapist to the four-year term and then, using his power as a judge, start to lobby for change to this section of the law. He could have given a much stronger message to men who commit violence against women.
