Hawcutt collection Description Pen & Ink and Acrylic print by Gertrude Hawcutt. In 1838 a lighthouse was constructed of wood and on 18 July 1855 sparks from a steam ship set fire to this lighthouse. In March 1859 a permanent lighthouse of stone was erected. In 1876 the large black iron bridge was built over the canal for the Hamilton North Western Railway whose line then crossed the beach. One of the first light house keepers was George Thompson. The Lighthouse keepers cottage beside the lighthouse dates back to 1850. Format .jpeg
